Visit of Senior Officers of British Railways, Western Region to the Festiniog Railway

An event of some importance took place on Monday, 12th November 1956 when Mr. K. W. C. Grand, General Manager of the Western Region, paid a visit to the Railway accompanied by Mr. S. G. Hearn, Chief Operating Superintendent, and Mr. C. J. Rider, Public Relations & Publicity Officer.

After an inspection of the Harbour Station at Portmadoc the party, including Directors of the Festiniog Railway Company and Society, travelling by a special train, hauled by "Taliesin", to Boston Lodge where they carried out an inspection of the Railway's Works and Installations. The "special" then proceeded to Penrhyndeudraeth - the first steam-hauled passenger train to work to this station since 1939.

After lunch the party drove to Tan-y-Bwlch and were met by Mrs. Jones, the former stationmistress, who was dressed in Welsh costume. A works train, consisting of the Baldwin marshalled between a four-wheeled brake van and a bogie brake composite, was waiting to take the party up the line to the Moelwyn Tunnel mouth and thence back to Portmadoc Harbour Station.
