Reopening to Tanygrisiau, 24 June 1978. The special train loaded with invited guests is waiting on Cwmorthin Bridge. John Gibbons is working the ex-LNER wartime ground frame at the points. Blanche is being driven by Phil Dowse. It had brought the first train (non-corridor stock for volunteers and members), to Tanygrisiau. This was then locked in the loop while Blanche went back down the line with the staff token to collect Merddin Emrys, driven by Evan Davies, and the corridor stock with the official party. Major Olver's inspection train had run earlier in the day prior to services officially commencing.

The picture shows Blanche coming off the train to go back onto its own train, while Merddin took the train into the station. This left Merddin trapped at the far end of the station, meaning Blanche had to take the ten carriage train of corridor stock unaided, in reverse with no sanding gear, back up the hill. Note the boom barrier on Stwlan Dam Road Crossing.
