Date
11/09/1941
Princess on a Down slate train at Tan y Bwlch, 11 September 1941. This is a valuable record of a wartime Down slate train, gravity workings having ceased at the same time as the passenger service. With so few trains running, there was no longer any benefit employing staff as brakesmen when the locomotive could simply take any loaded waggons with it when returning back down the line. This could be one of last trains. Note the 'gubbins' in tender, the gibbet crane outside the goods shed (with stacks of sleepers half hidden by smoke?), Llyn Mair, and the use of wooden slate waggons right up until the end. The goods sidings here were evidently in use right up until the end of old company operations; the goods waggons left here during the closure not being present in this scene.
