Prince at Tan y Bwlch with Tom Davies and Evie Roberts 30 July 1968. This photograph represents something of a watershed, capturing a unique period where much of the quaint charm of the preserved FR was fading away in the face of the larger, utilitarian railway that began to emerge. Both Prince and Tom Davies represent the spirit of the Old Company. However the locomotive is visibly worn and was withdrawn before the end of the year, whilst Tom Davies is not long from retirement after an extraordinary forty years on the footplate. In the background, newly built barn carriages in teak livery and sidings full to bursting with Deviation waggons point to the future.
