Title
Up mixed train at Tan y Bwlch Station.
Up mixed train at Tan y Bwlch Station, probably hauled by Merddin Emrys. We may never know why two passenger sets were combined in this view but we can date it to shortly after the First World War, well before the worst dilapidation made such occurrences commonplace. A tail of slate waggons would not have been a feature of that period either. The fact that the goods yard point indicator (bottom right), albeit devoid of lam, double arm signal, and the fence remain in situ suggests that the date is probably about 1924. The nearest vehicle, one of the large Brown Marshalls bogie vans, has yet to be converted to accommodate passengers (No. 5 now carriage No. 12, converted 1929/30) and the sixth vehicle, Bogie Van No. 2, was converted in 1920/21. The furthest visible carriage, half hidden by the station and signal is bogie carriage No. 15 or 16. Of the two Bowsiders, the nearer is 17 or 18 and the other 19 or 20. These and Van No. 2 look as if they may have recently received the green 'Colonel Stephens' livery, although they could easily still retain the lined dark red livery.

The man on the left in the foreground is possibly Will Jones, at this time the Station Porter. The two other men are dressed as guards. The presence of two guards along with the two sets suggests that a locomotive failed in service, and the following train took all the stock, taking both guards with them.
