Merddin Emrys on the end of the Cob, Porthmadog circa 1923. The locomotive is fitted with LT's power bogies, is visibly grubby and is burning what looks to be poor quality coal typical for the period. The fireman is Williams R. Williams. Harbour Station is behind the photographer. The train comprises WHR carriages cut down for use on the FR. The Ashbury Summer Carriage next to the locomotive is probably No. 28, followed by an Ashbury Corridor, and a Pickering Brake Composite. The England locomotive (possibly Palmerston) and probably the Simplex at the rear of train on original make for an interesting scene. The Simplex was known at this time to be attached to the rear of service trains for faster transit between yards (it also saved petrol). In theory it could be being coupled to the rear of the train for delivery to Beddgelert Siding or Croesor Junction.
