Old Moelwyn Tunnel South Portal looking out down towards Gelliwiog circa 1950. The first few yard of the tunnel as seen here is lined in stone but beyond here the tunnel was bare rock. The damp conditions are very obvious in the cutting. Note how the sleepers appear to have been adzed to take the chairs. It is at the tunnel entrance and there may have been no depth for second hand standard gauge sleepers which were deeper than the old FR ones and no room to lift the track.
