Garnedd Tunnel South looking Up, 16 April 1954, as it was immediately prior to the preservation era. The formation around the side of the rock outcrop on the right was one of multiple parts of the original route bypassed by subsequent upgrades, typically involving the easing of sharp curves. This excellent quality photograph demonstrates the degree of curve that was necessary even inside the tunnel, giving some idea of the severity of the original formation.
