Title
Slate waggons in the ex-GWR Transhipment Yard.
Date
24/08/1952
Slate waggons in the ex-GWR Transhipment Yard, Blaenau Ffestiniog 24 August 1952. Most of the vehicles are GWR 2-ton waggons along with a handful of FR 2-ton waggons at either end. These vehicles will have come down the FR (on the section of leased track) from the former Duffws Station and the inclines in operation there. The loaded slate seen here could be from Maenofferen Quarry, as it had no road access, or possibly Bwlch y Slater and Cwt y Bugail (New Welsh) via the Rhiwbach Tramway, which was still very much in operation at this time. These slates will be transhipped into standard gauge waggons bound for Bala.

Note that the track is not FR, the rail is a heavier bullhead section likely carried over from standard-gauge design. Most of the buildings are still in situ today, except the small building at the far end of the slate waggons.
