Title
Foot of Rhiwbach Incline No. 1.
Foot of Rhiwbach Incline No. 1 at the far end of Duffws, April 1954. Also know as the Dolgaregddu Incline, named after the road that crosses over the bridge. The loaded waggons have just descended, although the cable looks to be slack. The slate coming down this route was from Maenofferen Quarry, as it had no road access, or possibly Bwlch y Slaters and Cwt y Bugail (New Welsh) via the Rhiwbach Tramway, which was still very much in operation at this time. This area of Blaenau Ffestiniog (Bodafon and the Police Station) has been extensively landscaped, destroying the lower section seen here. This photograph shows the lower extent of the incline, and how much height was gained overall.

The rocks on the left are interesting. The practice of hauling loads up to the quarries by using large rocks in the descending waggons as a counterbalance was fairly common, and this is exactly where they would have been unloaded after having served their purpose.

The track is also worthy of note. The point is flat-bottom type rail, itself unusual on the FR. The curved rails immediately beyond it are much heavier, but then the incline reverts to rail of a similar profile to the points. The curve may be laid with heaver rail to resist turning forces and/or act as an anchor/backstop against the incline rails from moving down.
