Tropencraig looking North, 1945. Note Down disc for Tanygrisiau & Cwmorthin Siding at Penlan in the distance. Tanygrisiau village looms out of the mist far below the railway. Both the houses perched on the edge of the cliff beyond the signal and those at the end of the terrace below were subsequently pulled down. The latter suffered heavy damage to the rear extension by a rockfall, and ended up being bought by the FRCo. for demolition so that rock bolting could take place.

This photograph and others like it capture the unique character of this section before massive depopulation, triggered by the demise of the slate industry, cost it much of its charm. That said, the clear footpath to the right of the rails would have been a cause of very real danger in the wrong circumstances.
