Duffws Station Staff and operating staff in the 1890s. In the background, the Company appears to have mounted to the station building provisions from the Explosives Act 1875 (in connection with gunpowder van traffic) alongside the general railway byelaws.
Top row: left Morris Davies (Driver), one from right Thomas J. Thomas (Fireman).
Front row: fourth from left William Owen (Stesion Fain Stationmaster), fourth from right Thomas Hovenden (Railway Inspector/Constable), third from right John Pritchard Roberts (Duffws Stationmaster). They are distinguished by their longer, more expensive frock coats.
Hovenden has embroidered on his uniform 'General Inspector' whilst most other staff wear the usual double-breasted (pilot cloth) pea coats with FRCo badges sewn onto the right lapel. Their ranks are made out onto their left lapels and upon their kepi caps. It is known that these were embroidered using red worsted for the ranks of ''Signalman" "Breaksman" "Shunting Guard" and "Foreman" - all of whom are present here.
Fireman Thomas stands out from the crowd with his Elbe mariner cap, although interestingly the man sat front left sports the standard issue kepi with the rank of "Stoker". Morris Davies is smartly dressed in pinstripe trousers and tweed waistcoat beneath the usual cotton jacket.
