Ffestiniog Power Station under construction.
Ffestiniog Power Station under construction circa 1960 - 1961. This photograph is an important record of just how much work was involved in creating the scheme, and how the surrounding area has healed since. All traces of the FR have been swept away in order to create the access road the the lower lake (Llyn Ystradau) and the mountain-side is heavily excavated. The only visible indications of the old railway are the spectacular series of inclines to Moelwyn Quarry on the eastern slope of Moelwyn Bach, and in the far distance, the remains of Moelwyn Zinc Mine, the produce from which was formerly carried away by train.

Of note is the fresh spoil from the tunnelling to provide the water pipes to Llyn Stwlan, as well as the sections of steel pipe resting on top in readiness for installation. The new buildings on the right look like temporary accommodation for construction workers (similar buildings can be seen below the skeleton turbine house). At the bottom of the newly constructed valve house access road (which the new FR route would subsequently cross) is Bryn Elltyd house.

In the foreground, the large rockface in the bottom left of shot marks the future edge of Tanygrisiau Station carpark. The new FR route would subsequently be built on the land seen in the bottom right hand corner of this scene, crossing over the Afon Cwmorthin, the original course of which can be seen heading down away into the valley. The photographer is stood high up on the hillside below Cwmorthin Village.
