The old route at Glanyrafon Ddu embankment north of Moelwyn Halt, presumably in the early 1950's. This location subsequently became the shore of Llyn Ystradau, although the route to the south is rarely underwater, and it interesting to ponder whether a compromise could have been engineered had the Central Electricity Generating Board been less hostile. It would have preserved the continuous gradient and excellent civil engineering on this section of the route. The FR would have avoided having to build the Deviation, saving a fortune in time and money. It is painful to dwell on how the heritage of the railway might have been better protected if the railway had not been burdened so, especially the lost features and buildings at the top of the line. The CEGB, had they realised that the preservationists really did intend to restore the line, and were not in it for the compensation, could also have saved money, as the cost of adapting the reservoir would surely have been less than the compensation eventually paid.

In the middle distance just above the railway but below the wooded hillside, the outline of an old incline can perhaps be made out at Buarth Melyn. Wrysgan Incline can also be seen in the far distance.
