Welsh Pony with slate empties on the 'new' embankment below Tanygrisiau Station. Note the wooden framed tender. Bryn Elltyd house in the background. This photo appeared in the August 1924 railway magazine (along with others taken in 1923). The locomotive is working hard, and the exhaust smoke indicates that it had suffered a violent slip with a well made fire. The train comprises some 50 waggons (in theory the maximum for England locomotives in the dry) and a double balcony brake van at the rear (No. 6 or 7).
The long, low, pale roofed building just right of centre is the warehouse that stood alongside the branch to the foot of the Wrysgan Quarry Incline. The Afon Cwmorthin flows through the stone culvert visible under the stone embankment. Note the gate in the boundary wall on the left and what appears to be ladder climbing the side of the embankment up to the railway, possibly a right of way?
