File metadata
Merddin Emrys emerging from Old Moelwyn Tunnel North with an Up train circa 1935. Note the depth of the walled cutting. The photographer is stood at the far end of the cutting near the cottage junction for Brookes' Granite quarry branch. This shot vividly demonstrates the minimum loading gauge for locomotives passing through the tunnel which, dating back to the 1840's, had not been dug with steam engines in mind.
