Title
Pont Goch (WSCo Viaduct).
Pont Goch (WSCo Viaduct) circa 1860. Welsh Slate (Lord Palmerston's lower quarry) built this viaduct between their main workings and the Penybont Mill and Glanydon waste tips. This exceptionally early photograph shows a glimpse of the FR's Dinas Branch at the very end of its horse-drawn era.

Note the natural course of the Afon Barlwyd and the wooden slate and slab waggons (the latter loaded with heavy timber) beyond the dry stone wall on the right. In the far distance can be glimpsed Holland's 1839 Cesail Incline to Gloddfa'r Gesail (later Oakeley's upper quarry). At this early date it was very much separated from Welsh Slate, and the middle quarry (Gloddfa Ganol) hadn't been developed. Neither of the inclines often seen in later photographs has been built yet (either side of the viaduct), and the original access to Welsh Slate is some way off to the right of the photographer when this scene was captured.
